Wasp advice

Nest signs, what to do if you find a wasp nest, and how to keep wasps away. Wasps are seasonal, but when they are active they cause more calls than almost anything else. A nest can appear in weeks and grow fast, and by late summer wasps become more defensive as the colony breaks down. Knowing what to look for and what to do can save you a lot of trouble. What to do if you find a nest

What to do if you find a nest

Keep away from it, keep children and pets clear, and do not block the entrance. Do not try to remove it yourself, disturbing a nest is the fastest way to get stung. Call a professional for advice, especially if the nest is close to a door, window, patio or children's play area.

Professional wasp nest treatment is safe and usually completed in a single visit. See wasp nest removal for the full service.

Preventing wasp nests

Preventing wasp nests

There is no guaranteed way to stop wasps nesting on your property, but sealing gaps around eaves, fascias, soffits and roof tiles helps. If you have had a nest in the same spot before, it is worth checking that area early in the season.

Common questions

How do I know if I have a wasp nest?+

Wasps funnelling in and out of the same spot are the giveaway. Listen out too for buzzing or scratching from a loft or wall cavity.

What should I do if I find a wasp nest?+

Keep away from it, keep children and pets clear, and do not block the entrance. Do not try to remove it yourself. Call a professional for advice.

Do wasps return to an old nest?+

Nests are single-season structures, and a new colony will not move back into last year's nest. Wasps can, however, build afresh nearby, so it is worth keeping an eye on the same spot each spring.

Do I need the nest physically removed?+

Not usually. The aim is normally to treat the colony itself, and once the colony is gone the nest is no longer a problem. ---
